Chart: Highest Paid State Legislature Has Very Weak Conflict of Interest Rules
Reinvent Albany compared the conflict of interest and accountability rules in New York’s December 2022 legislative pay raise law with our recommendations and those made by the 2018 Compensation Commission (chart below).
We looked at five areas that we and the Compensation Commission identified as being at risk for conflict of interest and unethical behavior.
The bottom line is that the law giving the legislature a huge pay raise includes very weak controls on conflict of interest and leaves massive loopholes for “family businesses” and fiduciary business relationships that invite pay-to-play.
