Subsidy Sheet: Hochul overhypes Micron again with false $100 billion claim
NY corporate giveaway news from this week:
- Despite repeated debunking, Governor Hochul again falsely claims Micron’s Clay/Syracuse chip fab is a $100 billion project. Nope – it’s a $20 billion project that just got underway and is scheduled to be making chips by 2030. Note that only phase one of the four-phase Clay chip fab has gotten direct federal subsidies. Please, Governor Hochul, take credit for the $20 billion fab – that’s plenty impressive – and stop with the overhype. You’re hurting your credibility for no reason and distracting from a real accomplishment.
- National subsidy watchdog Good Jobs First writes about why governments should stop subsidizing Amazon. Since 2013, NY has provided the company with over $700 million in subsidies.
- The New York City Football Club broke ground on a soccer stadium that will vacuum up hundreds of millions in subsidies from New York City taxpayers (QNS).
- Trump’s pick for the Department of Housing and Urban Development, Scott Turner, headed a council overseeing the federal Opportunity Zone program (NYT). If NY does not pass S543 (Gianaris) / A2170 (Dinowitz), the state and city could lose up to $424 million annually to OZs from 2029.
