Subsidy Sheet: Subsidy stories you may have missed
NY corporate giveaway news from this week:
- Karl Valere, chief of staff for Queens Assemblymember Khaleel Anderson, writes about the $1.8 billion that tax abatements cost NY schools in 2021, citing data from Good Jobs First’s landmark analysis (LI Herald).
- If Tesla cuts more jobs, the Buffalo SolarCity plant could be a “principal target,” according to one analyst (Biz Journals).
- Micron was ordered to pay $445 million for patent infringements (Reuters). They would probably like to use some of the up to $5.5 billion in expense reimbursements they’ll receive from New York State.
- NYC may restore its J-51 tax break, which lapsed in 2022 and still costs the city $250 million a year (Crain’s). The program subsidizes repairs and renovations of multifamily buildings.
- Michigan is reviving its film tax credit with $2 billion over 10 years. Michael D. LaFaive at the Mackinac Center for Public Policy writes about why that’s a bad idea.
- Anytime you think NY’s corporate welfare is the worst, just remember that Missouri lawmakers approved tax breaks for a facility that builds parts for nuclear weapons (Kansas City Star).
