Watchdog Groups Call for Public Hearing and Transparent Review of Next BOE Commissioner

Reinvent Albany joined Citizens Union, Common Cause/NY, League of Women Voters of the City of New York, and NYPIRG to release a joint letter calling on NYC Council Speaker Adrienne Adams and NYC Council Majority Leader Keith Powers to hold a public hearing for the New York County Democratic nominee for Commissioner of Elections. Currently, the NYC Council is the only elected body with the power to impact the selection of commissioners to the NYC Board of Elections. The Council should take this opportunity to implement measures that would vet the qualifications and experience of this nominee, and future nominees for Commissioner of Elections. This review process should be transparent, fair, and thorough, as outlined in our full letter. “Our groups believe election commissioners must have the relevant qualifications to lead an election administration agency, and be appointed based on their merits rather than their affiliation to a party, a candidate, or an elected official.”
