Fair Elections for NY Coalition Statement on Potential Changes to Public Campaign Finance Program

NEW YORK – The Fair Elections for New York coalition released the following statement following reports that lawmakers in Albany are considering modifications to the Public Campaign Finance Program:

“The Fair Elections for New York coalition is deeply concerned about recent discussions within the legislature on potential structural changes to the Public Campaign Finance law, despite the inclusion of funding for the program as currently designed weeks ago in the enacted state budget. It is crucial that the program remains in effect for the 2024 election cycle, as planned.

Our coalition firmly believes that the agreed-upon funding for the Public Campaign Finance law and the small donor matching system represents a significant and necessary step towards granting everyday New Yorkers a stronger voice in their democracy. Any question to substantially change the program’s matching criteria – or any other foundational aspect of the program – with only days left in the legislative session undermines the desires of New Yorkers who have long awaited the program’s implementation. Lawmakers must honor the wish of New York voters and ensure that the Public Campaign Financing Program remains in full effect for the 2024 elections and free from any last-minute structural changes.”
